I just got back from the LeadingAge Ohio Annual Conference & Tradeshow, and I'm still buzzing from the conversations, sessions, and honestly, a lot of validation for what I'm hearing from the senior living organizations we work with each week.

This year's theme was "Changemakers." And if there's one thing that came through loud and clear in every session I attended, it's that senior living is in the middle of a real transformation — and the organizations that lean into it are the ones that will thrive.

Person-Centered Care Takes Center Stage

See ME: The Power of Person-Centered CareThe keynote, "See ME: The Power of Person-Centered Care" with Petra Marquardt, set the tone perfectly. She talked about how customer service in aging services is no longer a "nice to have" — it's a competitive differentiator and is essential to earning and maintaining trust. Families and older adults expect transparency, quality and engagement. Every interaction with families is an opportunity to strengthen or weaken trust.

She also shared a line on leadership that stuck with me: "How I feel about me in your presence — that is great leadership." It reframes leadership around how you make people feel — are you uplifting them, giving them joy, leaving them better than you found them — rather than just what you know or decide. It's a good gut-check for anyone leading a team in this industry, and also for marketing and sales teams who are building relationships with seniors and their families.

Repositioning Senior Living Campuses for a New Generation

The topic I couldn't stop thinking about — because I hear it from the communities we work with regularly — was growth and repositioning. A session led by Scott Buchanan, CEO of The Ohio Masonic Communities, called "Repositioning for Relevance: Strategies to Modernize Aging Senior Living Campuses," laid out exactly what today's (and tomorrow's) residents expect, including:

  • Resort-style wellness spaces for fitness, relaxation and socialization
  • Curated dining venues that flex between grab-and-go, sit-down and bar-style service
  • Larger floor plans, with a real preference for two bedrooms
  • Robust at-home services that support aging in place

Semi-private rooms and shared accommodations are quickly becoming a thing of the past. I heard several conversations at the tradeshow about campuses still operating with shared rooms — and everyone agrees that model is changing fast.

Building Smart for What's Next

This isn't theoretical for the communities we work with. Many senior living organizations are in the middle of new builds, additions or full campus remodels right now, and independent living is where we're seeing the strongest growth. Baby boomers aren't "on their way" to senior living anymore — they're here, and their expectations look nothing like the generation before them.

Communities built decades ago, some over a century old, are having to reimagine their footprint entirely: tearing down outdated wings, reconfiguring shared spaces into private apartment-style units and rethinking amenities from the ground up. Buchanan outlined a few key principles in the Repositioning for Relevance presentation:

  • Involve staff in the design phase to create real operational efficiencies

  • Standardize designs across multiple campuses to gain continuity and financial advantages

  • Build for the future, not just today's needs, so your community can keep shifting as expectations evolve

New Builds in Senior Living Need a Marketing Strategy

Here's the piece that often gets overlooked: a beautiful new wing or a modernized wellness center doesn't sell itself. Every repositioning or new-build project needs a marketing strategy built alongside it — ideally a year or more before opening day. That means knowing your goals, planning your collateral and budgeting appropriately for campaigns and advertising, rather than letting homes or apartments sit empty.

This is exactly the kind of strategic partnership we specialize in — helping communities translate physical growth into a compelling story that reaches the right prospects at the right time.

Let’s Talk Strategy!

If your community is considering a renovation, expansion or new independent living build, now is the moment to start planning the strategy behind it, not after the ribbon-cutting. The organizations thinking ahead — pairing thoughtful design with a smart, well-timed marketing plan — are the ones who will be ready to welcome this next generation of residents with open doors and full communities. I'd love to talk through what that could look like for your campus. Let’s chat.
