Recently I went to a conference for professional women and the biggest takeaway I left with is that you must have a mission. What kind of mission? Everyone should have a mission in life and his/her career to establish your goals, right? But how the heck do you create (or even know) your mission?

Every company should have a mission, and to have that mission you need amazing people to share it with. When you hire employees and move forward, you want them to carry out your mission and be just as passionate as you with your business or product.

How to do you know if your employee is in the right position?

1. Hire someone with an element of weird

What does that mean? When you hire an employee with an element of weird, you are hiring someone not like you. Why would you do that? Basically, if you hire someone like everyone already in your office, you will not get innovative and out-of-the-box thinking. Yep, that is right. You will get someone that is the same. I am not saying you don’t want people like you, but you do want someone on your staff willing to push the envelope and challenge you to look at things from a different perspective.

2. Understand what motivates each position you are hiring for

When you hire someone in sales, typically they are motivated by money. They should be passionate about your product and want to sell and make money for you and for themselves. It is pretty important to understand what motivates employees in every position or, guess what, they will be looking and so will you. If you cannot keep staff motivated or understand what keeps them hungry to achieve, then you will have turnover or unhappy workers.

3. Select someone who is trainable and flexible

Hello World: yes this a song by Lady Antebellum but you need to realize in today’s world that you cannot depend that once you started a job it will stay the same. Life is changing and your job may be changing as well, so don’t be afraid to change. You need staff that will do the same. You want to surround yourself with people who are willing to take a risk, change and challenge you. Train staff and be flexible to change. Welcome to the real world.

4. Many can speak a good interview, but can they perform?

Just because your latest employee can communicate does not mean they can perform. It goes back to the old saying: Can you walk the walk? Can you deliver what you say you can deliver? It is important to not just rely on conversation, but look at skills and whether your new employee can actually perform with the skills they claim to have.

5. Hire hungry and humble

I don’t know about you, but hungry and humble are some of the best team players to have in your organization. If you are hungry, you will work hard and be innovative to help the company grow. If you are humble, you are easy to get along with and not all about yourself. Typically an employee that is both hungry and humble has skills and natural enthusiasm to help the team connect to the company’s mission.
