Earlier this week, I noticed a change on Facebook, although I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was. Then I noticed a couple of articles talking about what I couldn’t put my finger on: the logo.
Facebook unveiled a new logo on Tuesday, and although the change is quite subtle--you can see a “before and after” comparison here--the facelift was necessary. Josh Higgins, the creative director at Facebook, had this to say about it:
When Facebook’s logo was first created in 2005, the company was just getting started and we wanted the logo to feel grown up and to be taken seriously. Now that we are established, we set out to modernize the logo to make it feel more friendly and approachable.
We can read between the lines. Facebook did this to be mobile-friendly.
Back in March, we warned you about Google’s algorithm change and how important being mobile-friendly suddenly became. And then in April, we explained what you could do to minimize the hit your traffic was going to take because of it.
Now we’re seeing the big sites make even more changes.
Facebook’s website was already optimized for mobile use before Google’s “Mobilegeddon” hit. However, the older logo wasn’t quite made for mobile screens; the squared-off, thicker letters of the previous brand design were made to look great on desktop.
When you go to the desktop version of Facebook, though, the logo isn’t even present, a clear sign of just how important Facebook is taking the mobile experience of their platform. The new logo is much easier to read on a mobile interface, and the company realizes how important that is--especially with over half a billion Facebook users accessing it from a mobile device.
What Facebook’s Logo Change Means For You
Facebook’s decision to overhaul its logo once again underscores the importance of not only making your website itself mobile-friendly but also every moving piece that goes along with it. Facebook just spent a lot of money to make a change that most people will look at as insignificant, but this company didn’t get to where it is by making unnecessary alterations.
